Know How to Explain Autism to Your Child

There are many things you can do to help a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) overcome their challenges and enjoy a maximum quality of life while living with their condition.

No parent is ever prepared to hear that a child is anything other than happy and healthy, and an ASD diagnosis can be particularly frightening because it is a life-long condition with no treatment. If you have recently been given such a diagnosis, you are probably wondering and worrying about what comes next.

While it is true that ASD is not something a person simply “grows out of,” there are many treatments that can be highly effective at helping children with autism and these treatments can help children acquire new skills and overcome a wide variety of developmental challenges.

With autism, an early diagnosis is significant to treatment. Programs address skill deficits faced by children with autism in a fun and rewarding way in all developmental areas, including communication, language, play, social skills, imitation and cognition, motor skills, daily living skills, and emotional regulation.

The four main areas that are assessed when diagnosing a child with ASD are behavior and family history, cognitive abilities, communication skills, and medical assessment. The first assessment will usually include a childhood psychologist or pediatrician interviewing the parents and family members of the child undergoing autism spectrum disorder testing.

For children who are of school age, they may be asked to complete written literary and numeracy tests, as well as IQ tests, to test their cognitive levels against standardized benchmarks for their age.

Communication is one of the main areas impacted by ASD, the next phase of assessment will include a visit to a speech pathologist or therapist engaging the child in different communication tasks. This process will involve verbal and non-verbal tests and pragmatic language skills, and aims to gauge how well the child can communicate and how they use language.

Medical assessments may be carried out to evaluate a child’s physical health and uncover any physical ailments that may influence their testing results. If your child’s ASD test comes with a positive diagnosis, then you should also speak to your healthcare providers about the next steps, because treatment and management should start immediately. Additionally, you will want to discuss the best way for explaining autism to a child so that you can ensure that they’re comfortable and prepared for the treatment and management process.
